Cruz Roja Cozumel, the Cozumel Red Cross, provides vital services to maintain health and safety for all of the island's residents and visitors. We serve the community 24/7 with emergency response and medical services; lifeguard, first aid and other training; health education and disaster preparation and relief.
Cozumel remained sparsely populated before Jacques Cousteau's historic visit in 1959. During the 1960's and 70's, the island built its infrastructure and reputation as a mecca for divers and tourists. By 1983, the population had grown to 20,000 yet there was no emergency medical service. That year, a small group of concerned volunteers banded together to found a Red Cross chapter and provide an ambulance for Cozumel.

You may be wondering why the Red Cross is marked prominently on Cozumel tourist maps and why we think it's so important to lend our – and your -- support. Since the Red Cross is so well known internationally as disaster relief agency and a provider of community blood banks, the reasons certainly aren't obvious! Please allow us to explain:

In Mexico, the Cruz Roja's mission is much the same as in other parts of the world, but with a specific emphasis on community health care. Job one is to provide emergency medical services and emergency and relief to disaster victims. For Cruz Roja Mexicana to respond, the disaster need not be of overwhelming scope or effect a large number of people. When a person sustains an injury in a fall or a traffic accident, all it takes to get help is a three-digit phone call (dial 065). No matter what the time of day or night, the Red Cross has ambulances and paramedics waiting to assist, treat and transport. And this service is FREE! What an incredible safety net for both residents and visitors in Cozumel! We are very fortunate to have a Cruz Roja facility here.

Another part of that mission is to "contribute to improve health, prevent disease and alleviate suffering of the population, especially those in a position of vulnerability." This means that Mexican Red Cross delegations, including Cozumel's, provide daily, affordable, professional medical services – available to anyone who wants to use them. For our visitors who want to consult a doctor but do not because of language barrier or concern for the cost or worries about the facility itself, it is important that you know that bilingual doctors are at the Red Cross, that the cost to see them is probably much less than a do-it-yourself solution, and that the facility is modern, clean, federally inspected and accredited.

How We Can Help the Cozumel Red Cross?

Cozumel Red Cross works very hard to stretch the money so that it can offer these services and add more. It accepts private donations only and, as the island's population is small and incomes are low, the institution requires outside help to keep its doors open. This is how both we and you can make a real contribution to the island:

  • Book excursions through SAFE TOURS COZUMEL! They will donate 10% of your booking fee directly to Cozumel's Red Cross.
  • If you have need for medical services in Cozumel, use the Red Cross's doctors and infirmary.
  • DONATE money via PayPal or DONATE to or offer to buy and bring consumable medical supplies.
